Since many dangerous shoals have been removed, the Rhine flows calmly along nearly its entire length. The best remedy for pre-Christmas stress is therefore a few days spent cruising. You can relax as you’re guided past castles, palaces, and monasteries to ancient towns that are festively decorated. Here, you can shop for Christmas gifts at your leisure and enjoy the atmosphere with baked apples, mulled wine, and music. A visit to Strasbourg with its impressive cathedral is also an unforgettable experience. In the evening on board, you can look forward to festive delicacies and inspiration for your own Christmas menu.

BASIC - Charming Christmas Markets on the Rhine (SILVA)

All cruises are international, meaning that all materials—such as menus, shipboard announcements, etc.—are in English. Similarly, excursions are available with English-speaking guides, and the crew on board speaks English (and usually German as well).

RÜDESHEIM

Drosselgasse, with its half-timbered facades, is a picturesque showcase of the excellent wines from the Upper Middle Rhine Valley—a landscape that embodies German Romanticism and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rüdesheim has always been protected by four castles, as it is situated at a strategic point at the end of former trade routes. The ruins of Ehrenfels, Boosenburg, and Brömserburg castles, which today house the Rheingau Wine Museum, are remnants of the town’s rich history.

MAINZ

With 2,000 years of history, Mainz is not only one of the oldest cities in Germany but also a place where great history comes alive at every turn. Tradition is celebrated in full force at Christmas too! Be sure to visit the historic market square at Domplatz. The illuminated and decorated Mainz Cathedral is sure to enchant you.

KOBLENZ

Discover Koblenz during your Rhine cruise. Its history stretches back more than 2,000 years, making it one of Germany’s oldest cities—and one of the most picturesque, with a wealth of historical, architectural, and cultural attractions. Admire Koblenz’s palaces, stately homes, churches, and historic buildings in the narrow, romantic nooks and crannies of the old town. As the A-ROSA ship approaches the famous Deutsches Eck, you’ll be captivated.

Itinerary

Day Place Arrival Departure
1 Cologne - 17:00
Welcome to Cologne! The typical friendliness that you find at every turn makes visitors feel at home right away. It’s not unusual to quickly get chatting to strangers and even go for a couple of glasses of Kölsch with them. The main landmark – Cologne Cathedral – watches over the whole city. It is the third-tallest church building in the world, at 157.38 metres. It might be a bit of a trek up to the top of the tower, but it’s worth it. You’ll be rewarded with an unforgettable view of the city and the Rhine spread out before you.
2 Rüdesheim 10:00 18:00
In the Upper Middle Rhine Valley – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the town of Rüdesheim marks the end of several old merchants’ routes. This strategically important point used to be protected by four castles. Picturesque Rüdesheim is known all around the world for its outstanding wines. Drosselgasse, an alleyway with half-timbered facades, is known as ‘The World’s Longest Wine Bar‘ and is reputed to be the most-visited tourist attraction in Germany after Cologne Cathedral. If you want to sample the local wines, head to the rustic wine taverns in the old town.
3 Germersheim (Speyer) 08:00 19:00
Welcome to the Upper Rhine. Germersheim is only about 20 km from the city of Speyer, which is over 2000 years old. Speyer is Germany’s oldest planned medieval town. Speyer’s most prominent monument is its cathedral. As one of the country’s most important High Romanesque cathedrals, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You are sure to have an enjoyable day in Speyer.
4 Strasbourg (Kehl) 07:00 18:00
Today your Rhine river cruise will call at Strasbourg – a centre of European policymaking. With its medieval half-timbered houses and its elegant city palaces, Strasbourg really stands out from the crowd. But the highlight is the cathedral. From its viewing platform, the city’s half-timbered houses appear as small as pieces from a model railway set. Enjoy your day in the French part of the Rhine region!
5 Mainz 06:00 12:00
Mainz is known for its cheerful atmosphere and its hospitality. Why not go for a stroll along the tranquil riverbank or enjoy a good glass of local wine while you’re there? You could also visit the city’s main landmark: Saint Martin’s Cathedral. It boasts one of the richest church interiors in the Christian world. With 2,000 years of history, Mainz is not just one of the oldest cities in Germany – it is also a place where you can see history come alive wherever you turn.
5 Loreley Valley 13:00 -
The Ijsselmeer is an inland lake that was created by diking the Wadden Sea and the Zuiderzee bay. This is where you’ll find the lovely little town of Hoorn – make sure you explore it during your cruise along the northern Rhine.
5 Koblenz 18:30 21:30
Koblenz is where you’ll find Roman history, a high-tech research hub and a buzzing cultural scene all in one place. Don’t miss the delightful Kaiserin-Augusta-Anlagen, the southern part of the Rhine promenade. It was turned into a landscaped park with artistic historical monuments and sculptures between 1856 and 1861. If you fancy a treat, try Debbekooche. Originally eaten by those who couldn’t afford goose on Saint Martin’s Day, it is now considered a regional speciality and is traditionally served with apple sauce. Delicious!
