The magical Christmas markets are nestled in the narrow half-timbered streets. Rüdesheim is full of Christmas spirit. Celebrate with a glass of punch! Or perhaps one of its world-famous wines. One of the most beautiful Christmas markets in Germany takes place every winter between the old Römerberg district and the historic St. Paul’s Church. The market and the rest of the city are brimming with gift ideas for your loved ones. And for yourself, too. Mainz’s St. Nicholas Market has a history dating back more than 200 years. You can enjoy mulled wine and Christmas pastries on the square in front of the imposing cathedral. At the same time, you can admire the lights twinkling around the colorful Renaissance facades of the historic buildings surrounding the market. The Middle Rhine Panorama—with its enchanting valleys and mountains dotted with knights’ castles—calls for celebration in and of itself. All the way to Koblenz—experience the scent of sugared almonds while skating on the romantic ice rink in this ancient Roman town, accompanied by Christmas music and the clatter of picturesque horse-drawn carriages.

BASIC - Christmas Markets on the Rhine (BRAVA)

All cruises are international, meaning that all materials—such as the menu, shipboard announcements, etc.—are in English. Similarly, excursions are available with English-speaking guides, and the crew on board speaks English (and usually German as well).

Rüdesheim - During the Christmas cruise, you’ll visit the heart of Rhine Romanticism, which once inspired poets and musicians. Brahms, for example, composed his 3rd Symphony in Rüdesheim. From a cultural perspective, this most famous spot in the Rheingau has plenty to offer, including historic noble estates and fortifications. And of course, you shouldn’t miss the coffee specialty “Rüdesheimer Kaffee,” which was invented here.

Frankfurt proves with its Christmas tree that people here know how to do Christmas right. Between Römerberg and the historic Paulskirche all the way to the banks of the Main River, one of Germany’s most beautiful and oldest markets takes place every winter. Particularly popular as inspiration for Christmas gifts are Bethmanchen—marzipan pastries with almonds—or mulled wine

Coblenz - Its history stretches back more than 2,000 years, making it one of Germany’s oldest cities and one of the most picturesque, with an abundance of sights and cultural events. Admire Koblenz’s palaces, stately homes, grand townhouses, narrow streets, and romantic nooks.

Itinerary

Day Place Arrival Departure
1 Cologne - 17:00
Welcome to Cologne! The typical friendliness that you find at every turn makes visitors feel at home right away. It’s not unusual to quickly get chatting to strangers and even go for a couple of glasses of Kölsch with them. The main landmark – Cologne Cathedral – watches over the whole city. It is the third-tallest church building in the world, at 157.38 metres. It might be a bit of a trek up to the top of the tower, but it’s worth it. You’ll be rewarded with an unforgettable view of the city and the Rhine spread out before you.
2 Rüdesheim 10:00 16:00
In the Upper Middle Rhine Valley – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the town of Rüdesheim marks the end of several old merchants’ routes. This strategically important point used to be protected by four castles. Picturesque Rüdesheim is known all around the world for its outstanding wines. Drosselgasse, an alleyway with half-timbered facades, is known as ‘The World’s Longest Wine Bar‘ and is reputed to be the most-visited tourist attraction in Germany after Cologne Cathedral. If you want to sample the local wines, head to the rustic wine taverns in the old town.
2 Mainz 19:00 23:59
Mainz is known for its cheerful atmosphere and its hospitality. Why not go for a stroll along the tranquil riverbank or enjoy a good glass of local wine while you’re there? You could also visit the city’s main landmark: Saint Martin’s Cathedral. It boasts one of the richest church interiors in the Christian world. With 2,000 years of history, Mainz is not just one of the oldest cities in Germany – it is also a place where you can see history come alive wherever you turn.
3 Frankfurt 06:00 -
Welcome to Goethe’s birthplace! Here’s another historical fact while we’re at it: this is where the first German national assembly met in 1848. Today, the metropolis on the Main is home to the headquarters of major banks and is also one of Germany’s most important centres of business and commerce. Frankfurt is also known for its many futuristic-looking high-rises.

4 Loreley Valley 10:00 -
The Ijsselmeer is an inland lake that was created by diking the Wadden Sea and the Zuiderzee bay. This is where you’ll find the lovely little town of Hoorn – make sure you explore it during your cruise along the northern Rhine.
4 Koblenz 15:00 21:30
Koblenz is where you’ll find Roman history, a high-tech research hub and a buzzing cultural scene all in one place. Don’t miss the delightful Kaiserin-Augusta-Anlagen, the southern part of the Rhine promenade. It was turned into a landscaped park with artistic historical monuments and sculptures between 1856 and 1861. If you fancy a treat, try Debbekooche. Originally eaten by those who couldn’t afford goose on Saint Martin’s Day, it is now considered a regional speciality and is traditionally served with apple sauce. Delicious!
