The perfect setting for a date: a city full of winding streets and Renaissance facades, watched over by a magnificent basilica. The Saône and the Rhône meet in Lyon before setting off on a shared journey - to the Mediterranean. You have the opportunity to join them. The sun sets into the river while you sip Côte du Rhône. Medieval Vivers awaits you, as does Ardéche, which adds a special element to the atmosphere: magical caves dug into the limestone reaching a depth of 300 m. Above ground, the halls of the monumental Papal Palace await you in beautiful Avignon, while in Arles you can choose from sunny spots in romantic corners. But no fairy tale is complete without white horses, and here they are - in the wild Camargue!

BASIC - Rendez-Vous on the Rhone (LUNA)

All cruises are international, meaning that all materials such as menus, radio announcements, etc. are in English. Likewise, excursions are available with English-speaking guides and the staff on board speak English (mostly German).

Avignon - you've probably heard of the famous bridge from the song - this bridge really exists, or at least part of it: wars and floods reduced the original 22 arches of the bridge to 4. In 1660, after another flood, the bridge was abandoned. Apart from the bridge, you will probably be most pleased with Avignon's palaces, wine and culture. The Papal Palace is monumentally impressive, especially in the evening when it is illuminated.

Provence - literally, savoir-vivre means "knowing how to live". And the people of Provence know a lot about the good life. Surrounded by gnarled olive trees, lavender fields with purple hues and vineyards that produce the best red wines, it is a place to relax and enjoy life. Regional specialties include white nougat from Montélimar, candied fruit from Apt and the famous truffles from the Vaucluse mountains.

Arles - Night Café, Café Terrace at Night and the Trinquetaille Bridge in Arles – these are just three of the many works by Vincent van Gogh that capture Arles at its most beautiful. However, Van Gogh was not the only famous name to admire the city. It was already a thriving metropolis during the Roman Empire, and in the 4th century, Emperor Constantine the Great chose Arles as his residence. Today, Arles is a unique blend of modern urban development and historical monuments. The inhabitants seem to be enjoying life to the fullest, between the past and the present. This relaxed and pleasant atmosphere is one of the hallmarks of a cruise on the Saône and Rhône.

Itinerary

Day Place Arrival Departure
1 Lyon - 18:00
What a city! Everyone should see Lyon if they have the opportunity. With its old town – a UNESCO Word Heritage Site – its narrow alleyways, rear courtyards, popular quays and large squares on the Presqu’île, as well as the more than 200 sights that are illuminated after dark, this city takes visitors on an extraordinary journey through different eras and cultures. And right on its doorstep, to the north-west, is Beaujolais.
1 Panoramic passage through Lyon's old town 18:01 -
The Ijsselmeer is an inland lake that was created by diking the Wadden Sea and the Zuiderzee bay. This is where you’ll find the lovely little town of Hoorn – make sure you explore it during your cruise along the northern Rhine.
2 Viviers 10:00 19:00
This small medieval city in the Ardèche region is absolutely unmissable. It boasts numerous sights and is dotted with well-preserved monuments from bygone ages. Here in the Rhône region, the typical French attitude to life is also very apparent. Watch France’s history come alive in Viviers, and enjoy the diverse range of attractions that the city has to offer.
3 Arles 03:30 14:00
Arles in southern France is the Provençal city par excellence. This sun-drenched city of terracotta-tiled rooftops occupies a broad bend in the River Rhône. Many of its monuments have named UNESCO World Heritage Sites. What’s more, Arles was once a great Roman port. As if all that weren’t reason enough to visit, the city was also home to Vincent van Gogh for a while. Did you know that?
3 Avignon 18:00 -
Avignon is one of the most popular ports of call on A-ROSA’s Rhône cruises. It is an imposing, historic city in southern France that was home to several of the Catholic popes at one time. Make sure to visit the unique and unmissable Palais des Papes on an excursion to Avignon’s ancient quarter. The city and the surrounding region have a warm climate thanks to the Mediterranean – which means a pleasant stay for you!

5 Vienne 09:00 09:30
The multifaceted Vienne was once an important Roman city and, thanks to its location on the Rhône, the gateway to the heart of France. A number of ancient buildings from this period can still be seen today. For example, there is a Roman theatre, which is still used for events such as the summer jazz festival. There is also a very well preserved Roman temple in Vienne, surrounded by an impressive portico.
