You might be surprised that the Gothic arches don’t tremble to the sound of the organ at Strasbourg Cathedral, but then you realize they’ve been standing there for nearly 600 years. Christmas Mass in this world-famous cathedral is unforgettable. The medieval streets of Mainz and Koblenz are quieter and cozier. Half-timbered houses, twinkling lights, and the scent of baked apples warm the heart, while the winemaker’s punch warms you from the inside. Only the lonely Loreley sits on her cold rock, gazing at the Rhine. Her legendary tales are best enjoyed with cookies and hot chocolate—the icing on the cake.

PREMIUM - Christmas in the Southern Rhineland (CLEA)

All cruises are international, meaning that all materials—such as the menu, shipboard announcements, etc.—are in English. Similarly, excursions are available with English-speaking guides, and the crew on board speaks English (and usually German as well).

Rüdesheim - During the Christmas cruise, you’ll visit the heart of Rhine Romanticism, which once inspired poets and musicians. Brahms, for example, composed his 3rd Symphony in Rüdesheim. From a cultural perspective, this most famous spot in the Rheingau has plenty to offer, including historic noble estates and fortifications. And of course, you shouldn’t miss the coffee specialty “Rüdesheimer Kaffee,” which was invented here.

Frankfurt proves with its Christmas tree that people here know how to do Christmas right. Between Römerberg and the historic Paulskirche all the way to the banks of the Main River, one of Germany’s most beautiful and oldest markets takes place every winter. Particularly popular as inspiration for Christmas gifts are Bethmanchen—marzipan pastries with almonds—or mulled wine

Koblenz - Its history stretches back more than 2,000 years, making it one of Germany’s oldest cities and one of the most picturesque, with an abundance of sights and cultural events. Admire Koblenz’s palaces, stately homes, grand townhouses, narrow streets, and romantic nooks.

Itinerary

Day Place Arrival Departure
1 Frankfurt - 21:30
Welcome to Goethe’s birthplace! Here’s another historical fact while we’re at it: this is where the first German national assembly met in 1848. Today, the metropolis on the Main is home to the headquarters of major banks and is also one of Germany’s most important centres of business and commerce. Frankfurt is also known for its many futuristic-looking high-rises.
2 Koblenz 08:00 21:30
Koblenz is where you’ll find Roman history, a high-tech research hub and a buzzing cultural scene all in one place. Don’t miss the delightful Kaiserin-Augusta-Anlagen, the southern part of the Rhine promenade. It was turned into a landscaped park with artistic historical monuments and sculptures between 1856 and 1861. If you fancy a treat, try Debbekooche. Originally eaten by those who couldn’t afford goose on Saint Martin’s Day, it is now considered a regional speciality and is traditionally served with apple sauce. Delicious!
3 Rüdesheim 04:00 12:30
In the Upper Middle Rhine Valley – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the town of Rüdesheim marks the end of several old merchants’ routes. This strategically important point used to be protected by four castles. Picturesque Rüdesheim is known all around the world for its outstanding wines. Drosselgasse, an alleyway with half-timbered facades, is known as ‘The World’s Longest Wine Bar‘ and is reputed to be the most-visited tourist attraction in Germany after Cologne Cathedral. If you want to sample the local wines, head to the rustic wine taverns in the old town.
3 Wiesbaden 14:30 22:00
Wiesbaden, a city of elegance and joy, where magnificent architecture, green parks, and vibrant city life intertwine to create a harmonious whole. Immerse yourself in the world of spa houses and thermal springs, stroll along the magnificent boulevards, and let yourself be enchanted by the relaxed atmosphere of this charming city.
4 Speyer* 07:30 20:30
Welcome to the Upper Rhine. Speyer is over 2,000 years old and occupies a strategic location on a low terrace beside the river. It is Germany’s oldest planned medieval town. Speyer’s most prominent monument is its cathedral. As one of the country’s most important High Romanesque cathedrals, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You are sure to have an enjoyable day in Speyer. *alternatively Germersheim, depending on availability
5 Strasbourg 07:00 -
Today your Rhine river cruise will call at Strasbourg – a centre of European policymaking. With its medieval half-timbered houses and its elegant city palaces, Strasbourg really stands out from the crowd. But the highlight is the cathedral. From its viewing platform, the city’s half-timbered houses appear as small as pieces from a model railway set. Enjoy your day in the French part of the Rhine region!

6 Mannheim 10:30 20:00
As you sail along the southern Rhine during your river cruise, you will also learn about the many faces of Mannheim, the multicultural heart of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. Welcome to the compact city. From the Neckar to the palace, the city centre is laid out in grid formation. The streets here have no official names, and the area is instead divided into squares.
7 Mainz 00:30 12:30
Mainz is known for its cheerful atmosphere and its hospitality. Why not go for a stroll along the tranquil riverbank or enjoy a good glass of local wine while you’re there? You could also visit the city’s main landmark: Saint Martin’s Cathedral. It boasts one of the richest church interiors in the Christian world. With 2,000 years of history, Mainz is not just one of the oldest cities in Germany – it is also a place where you can see history come alive wherever you turn.
