The Rhine is a chameleon among the world’s rivers. At times it seems wild, especially near the Lorelei Cliffs; at others, it is vast, as when it flows into the Moselle in Koblenz. The romantic meadows of Rastatt invite you to have a picnic, and elsewhere people have tamed the river and transformed it into an ornamental companion to the elegant riverside promenades in cities like Basel. It is the perfect complement to Baroque and Gothic architecture and looks stunning in photographs.

PREMIUM - Experiences of the Southern Rhine 2026 (SILVA)

All cruises are international, meaning that all materials—such as the menu, shipboard announcements, etc.—are in English. Similarly, shore excursions are available with English-speaking guides, and the crew on board speaks English (and usually German as well).

Mainz – The Rhine meets the city of Mainz right between Lake Constance and the North Sea. This carnival city is known for its cheerfulness and hospitality. You’ll feel right at home here in no time. How about a stroll along the picturesque banks of the Rhine? Or a visit to Mainz Cathedral? It houses one of the richest collections of church furnishings in the Christian world. Among the most significant pieces are the tombstones of several archbishops and the altars. Another notable building is the Electoral Palace. It is a prime example of German Renaissance architecture.

Strasbourg - The Roman commander Drusus founded Strasbourg as a military base in 12 BC. Today, it is a thriving metropolis that has preserved many small half-timbered houses and a historic old town. Even a quick glance at Strasbourg Cathedral will tell you that you are standing before one of the most significant of its kind in Europe and one of the largest sandstone buildings in the world.

Basel – many people have passed through the “Gateway to Switzerland” only by car, but now your cruise can take you down the Rhine along the southern bank, allowing you to get to know Basel much better. The city is home to Switzerland’s oldest university. Among its other attractions are the medieval old town with its stairways and the Spalen Gate—and you’ll also find 27 museums here.

Itinerary

Day Place Arrival Departure
1 Cologne - 18:00
Welcome to Cologne! The typical friendliness that you find at every turn makes visitors feel at home right away. It’s not unusual to quickly get chatting to strangers and even go for a couple of glasses of Kölsch with them. The main landmark – Cologne Cathedral – watches over the whole city. It is the third-tallest church building in the world, at 157.38 metres. It might be a bit of a trek up to the top of the tower, but it’s worth it. You’ll be rewarded with an unforgettable view of the city and the Rhine spread out before you.
2 Rüdesheim 11:00 18:00
In the Upper Middle Rhine Valley – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the town of Rüdesheim marks the end of several old merchants’ routes. This strategically important point used to be protected by four castles. Picturesque Rüdesheim is known all around the world for its outstanding wines. Drosselgasse, an alleyway with half-timbered facades, is known as ‘The World’s Longest Wine Bar‘ and is reputed to be the most-visited tourist attraction in Germany after Cologne Cathedral. If you want to sample the local wines, head to the rustic wine taverns in the old town.
3 Speyer* 08:00 19:00
Welcome to the Upper Rhine. Speyer is over 2,000 years old and occupies a strategic location on a low terrace beside the river. It is Germany’s oldest planned medieval town. Speyer’s most prominent monument is its cathedral. As one of the country’s most important High Romanesque cathedrals, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You are sure to have an enjoyable day in Speyer. *alternatively Germersheim, depending on availability
4 Breisach 14:00 23:59
The little town of Breisach perches on a steep cliff along the Rhine, to the south-west of the Kaiserstuhl hills. Its main landmark is the cathedral, Münster Sankt Stephan. Set high above the town on a hill, the church overlooks the Rhine valley, housing an impressive collection of artworks. Geldermann, a well-known producer of sparkling wine, is also based here. A visit to Breisach is an absolute must during your Rhine cruise.
5 Huningue (Basel)* 08:00 19:30
Founded right on the spot where Switzerland, Germany and France meet, Basel soon became an important European hub and centre of trade due to its special location. A popular attraction in the city is Switzerland’s oldest zoo – which the locals affectionately call the ‘Zolli’. It is one of the most important zoos in Switzerland and has gained global recognition for its breeding programmes. Basel is also home to Switzerland's oldest university, 27 museums and the medieval old town. *Huningue or Breisach, if Basel cannot be reached in exceptional cases
6 Strasbourg (Kehl) 11:30 18:00
Today your Rhine river cruise will call at Strasbourg – a centre of European policymaking. With its medieval half-timbered houses and its elegant city palaces, Strasbourg really stands out from the crowd. But the highlight is the cathedral. From its viewing platform, the city’s half-timbered houses appear as small as pieces from a model railway set. Enjoy your day in the French part of the Rhine region!
7 Mainz 06:00 12:00
Mainz is known for its cheerful atmosphere and its hospitality. Why not go for a stroll along the tranquil riverbank or enjoy a good glass of local wine while you’re there? You could also visit the city’s main landmark: Saint Martin’s Cathedral. It boasts one of the richest church interiors in the Christian world. With 2,000 years of history, Mainz is not just one of the oldest cities in Germany – it is also a place where you can see history come alive wherever you turn.
7 Loreley Valley 13:00 -
The Ijsselmeer is an inland lake that was created by diking the Wadden Sea and the Zuiderzee bay. This is where you’ll find the lovely little town of Hoorn – make sure you explore it during your cruise along the northern Rhine.
7 Koblenz 18:30 21:30
Koblenz is where you’ll find Roman history, a high-tech research hub and a buzzing cultural scene all in one place. Don’t miss the delightful Kaiserin-Augusta-Anlagen, the southern part of the Rhine promenade. It was turned into a landscaped park with artistic historical monuments and sculptures between 1856 and 1861. If you fancy a treat, try Debbekooche. Originally eaten by those who couldn’t afford goose on Saint Martin’s Day, it is now considered a regional speciality and is traditionally served with apple sauce. Delicious!
