The Rhine is the chameleon of the world's rivers. Sometimes it seems wild; in the past it was really dangerous, especially at the Lorelei Rocks. The romantic meadows of Rastatt invite a picnic after an afternoon's rowing. And once man tamed the river and made it an ornamental companion for elegant waterfront promenades in cities like Basel. It's a great match for Baroque and Gothic architecture and looks stunning in photographs. Its true home, however, is amongst wild cliffs and dense forests, between chivalrous castles and wine-growing villages whose vineyards have become fertile over the course of its history.
All cruises are international, meaning that all materials such as the ship's newspaper, menus, radio announcements, etc. are in English. Likewise, excursions are available with English-speaking guides, and the on-board staff speaks English (usually German as well).
Halfway between Lake Constance and the North Sea, the Rhine flows into Mainz. This carnival city is known for its cheerful atmosphere and hospitality. Why not take a stroll along the tranquil riverfront or enjoy a glass of good local wine during your stay? You can also visit the town's main landmark: the Cathedral of St. Martin. It boasts one of the richest church interiors in the Christian world. Another important building in Mainz is the Kurfürstliche Schloss. It is an excellent example of the German Renaissance architectural style.
The Roman commander Drusus founded Strasbourg as a military base in 12 BC. Today it is a thriving metropolis that has preserved many small half-timbered houses and the historic old town. Even a glance at Strasbourg Cathedral tells you that you are standing in front of one of the most important buildings of its kind in Europe - and one of the largest sandstone structures in the world.
Many people only drive or drive through the "gateway to Switzerland". Now, when your Rhine cruise takes you along the South Rhine, you'll get to know Basel much better. The city is home to Switzerland's oldest university. Other attractions include the medieval old town with its staircases and Sleeping Gate - and 27 museums.
