Even UNESCO has fallen in love with the Middle Rhine Valley. This World Heritage Site sparks the romantic imagination of every visitor. What adventures did the heroic inhabitants of the mighty castles experience? What did they fight for—for their faith, their lands, power, or love? And how much truth is there in the legend of Lorelei and all the sailors who perished in the river’s wild currents because of her—currents that have since been tamed?

The magnificent scenery entices everyone—not just romantics, but also those with vivid imaginations and an interest in history—to raise a glass of excellent regional wine. As you do so, you can reminisce about the amazing experiences of the past few days and look forward to those ahead, when you’ll discover stunning scenery of natural beauty and some of the most beautiful cities along the Rhine.

PREMIUM - Legends of the Rhine (BRAVA)

All cruises are international, meaning that all materials—such as the menu, public announcements, etc.—are in English. Similarly, tours are available with English-speaking guides, and the onboard staff speak English (and usually German as well).

Cologne – Welcome to Cologne! The magnificent Cologne Cathedral, one of Germany’s most famous landmarks, towers proudly over the city and captivates visitors with its imposing architecture and rich details. Cozy cafés, lively beer gardens, and restaurants line the riverfront, inviting you to sit back and relax, while the charming streets of the old town, with their traditional houses, boutiques, and breweries, evoke the atmosphere of days gone by.

Lorelei - The Rhine begins to be truly impressive in the Middle Rhine Valley—and it’s no wonder, given that in Koblenz the Moselle pumps 315 m³ of water per second. Then the cliffs and riverbed narrow by nearly two-thirds, and high above, the legendary Lorelei has watched this natural drama unfold since time immemorial.

Upper Middle Rhine Valley – Wine-growing villages nestle respectfully along the riverbank, while castles look down on them from a safe height. UNESCO had good reason to designate the section of the Rhine between km 526 and 593 as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Which of the old castles is the most impressive? Perhaps Marksburg? This 13th-century fortress, including its frescoes, knights’ hall, and stairs carved into the rock, remains largely intact.

Itinerary

Day Place Arrival Departure
1 Cologne - 19:00
Welcome to Cologne! The typical friendliness that you find at every turn makes visitors feel at home right away. It’s not unusual to quickly get chatting to strangers and even go for a couple of glasses of Kölsch with them. The main landmark – Cologne Cathedral – watches over the whole city. It is the third-tallest church building in the world, at 157.38 metres. It might be a bit of a trek up to the top of the tower, but it’s worth it. You’ll be rewarded with an unforgettable view of the city and the Rhine spread out before you.
2 Rüdesheim 10:00 21:00
In the Upper Middle Rhine Valley – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the town of Rüdesheim marks the end of several old merchants’ routes. This strategically important point used to be protected by four castles. Picturesque Rüdesheim is known all around the world for its outstanding wines. Drosselgasse, an alleyway with half-timbered facades, is known as ‘The World’s Longest Wine Bar‘ and is reputed to be the most-visited tourist attraction in Germany after Cologne Cathedral. If you want to sample the local wines, head to the rustic wine taverns in the old town.
3 Germersheim (Speyer) 08:00 21:00
Welcome to the Upper Rhine. Germersheim is only about 20 km from the city of Speyer, which is over 2000 years old. Speyer is Germany’s oldest planned medieval town. Speyer’s most prominent monument is its cathedral. As one of the country’s most important High Romanesque cathedrals, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. You are sure to have an enjoyable day in Speyer.
4 Strasbourg (Kehl) 08:00 18:00
Today your Rhine river cruise will call at Strasbourg – a centre of European policymaking. With its medieval half-timbered houses and its elegant city palaces, Strasbourg really stands out from the crowd. But the highlight is the cathedral. From its viewing platform, the city’s half-timbered houses appear as small as pieces from a model railway set. Enjoy your day in the French part of the Rhine region!
5 Mainz 07:00 12:00
Mainz is known for its cheerful atmosphere and its hospitality. Why not go for a stroll along the tranquil riverbank or enjoy a good glass of local wine while you’re there? You could also visit the city’s main landmark: Saint Martin’s Cathedral. It boasts one of the richest church interiors in the Christian world. With 2,000 years of history, Mainz is not just one of the oldest cities in Germany – it is also a place where you can see history come alive wherever you turn.
5 Loreley Valley 13:00 -
The Ijsselmeer is an inland lake that was created by diking the Wadden Sea and the Zuiderzee bay. This is where you’ll find the lovely little town of Hoorn – make sure you explore it during your cruise along the northern Rhine.
5 Koblenz 18:00 23:59
Koblenz is where you’ll find Roman history, a high-tech research hub and a buzzing cultural scene all in one place. Don’t miss the delightful Kaiserin-Augusta-Anlagen, the southern part of the Rhine promenade. It was turned into a landscaped park with artistic historical monuments and sculptures between 1856 and 1861. If you fancy a treat, try Debbekooche. Originally eaten by those who couldn’t afford goose on Saint Martin’s Day, it is now considered a regional speciality and is traditionally served with apple sauce. Delicious!
