Ancient ruins, wild horses and old men playing petanque in the squares. Many of the scenes you will encounter on this trip look like something out of a picture book. It's the same in the rustic, rural Burgundy region, where the hillsides are covered in some of the world's most famous vineyards, from Pinot Noir to Chablis. You'll never tire of exploring the labyrinthine streets of the medieval-Baroque-modern merchant town of Lyon. But you can certainly eat your fill, because every corner of this city proves why Lyon is called "la ville de gueule" or "the city of mouths". Then it's time to lose yourself in picturesque Provence, where even your own watch will immediately start to slow down. Soak up the joy of life, the colours and the beauty of nature.
All cruises are international, meaning that all materials such as the ship's newspaper, menus, radio announcements, etc. are in English. Likewise, excursions are available with English-speaking guides and the on-board staff speaks English (usually German as well).
Every beautiful cruise on the Rhone starts in Lyon - at least A-ROSA's cruises do. And for good reason: Lyon is a gorgeous, modern city with an impressive old town and top-notch cuisine. Lyon owes its fine dining reputation in part to award-winning French chef Paul Bocuse, who chose it as the headquarters for his empire of brasseries, restaurants and cafés. The city is renowned for its simple yet high-quality cuisine based on regional produce, which has given the city its nickname la ville de gueule ('the city of taste').
Camargue - As we approach the Mediterranean, the landscape begins to change on this voyage, becoming wilder and more untamed. The Rhône begins to splinter here, carrying with it some 20 million tons of rock, sand and dirt each year, which wash into the Mediterranean. The Rhône Delta is famous for its black bulls, white horses and pink flamingos - you can see them among the salt marshes and rice paddies, filtering the water through their beaks for plankton. This marsh area is unique in France and covers 120 000 hectares. Most of the area was granted national park status in 1970. Don't miss the town of Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer with its 9th century fortified church.
Avignon - You've probably heard about the famous bridge in the song "Sur le pont d'Avignon". This bridge actually exists, or at least part of it: wars and floods have reduced the original 22 arches of the bridge to 4. In 1660, after another flood, the bridge was abandoned. Apart from the bridge, it is probably the palaces, the wines and the culture that will excite you most in Avignon. The Papal Palace is monumentally impressive, especially in the evening when it is illuminated by a light show.
