Between Duisburg and the Middle Rhine Valley, the river itself takes center stage. Castles tower above the river like a backdrop, vineyards line the banks, and every bend reveals a new vista. The landscape opens up like a stone curtain, and the famous Loreley emerges. As the Rhine winds through a narrow strait, the slate cliffs rise steeply, and the legend of the mysterious woman atop them becomes almost real. But this stage also belongs to the nearby cities: Koblenz, where the Rhine and Moselle meet; Rüdesheim with its wine taverns; Bonn with its Rhine-like tranquility; and Cologne and Düsseldorf with their urban energy—all of which have a close connection to the river. Waterfront promenades, cathedral spires, old towns, and modern skylines come together to create a breathtaking backdrop. Along the Middle Rhine, a harmonious blend of natural drama and cosmopolitan elegance unfolds, making the river the unifying element of a region that is not just a destination to visit, but an experience on the Rhine that you can enjoy.

PREMIUM - The Rhine, the Loreley, and the Charm of the Cities 2027 (AQUA)

All cruises are international, meaning that all materials—such as menus, shipboard announcements, etc.—are in English. Similarly, shore excursions are available with English-speaking guides, and the crew on board speaks English (and usually German as well).

Discover Koblenz during your cruise on the Rhine. Its history stretches back more than 2,000 years, making it one of Germany’s oldest cities—and one of the most picturesque, with a wealth of historical, architectural, and cultural attractions. Admire Koblenz’s palaces, stately homes, churches, and historic buildings in the narrow, romantic nooks and crannies of the old town. As the A-ROSA ship approaches the famous Deutsches Eck, you’ll be captivated.

Rüdesheim, situated at the foot of the Niederwald, is famous for its wines. Like many other places in the Middle Rhine Valley, it is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Tourists flock to the town to visit its numerous museums and interesting buildings. Just under 10,000 people live here, and they are particularly proud of the castles in the area, including Brömserburg, Boosenburg, and Ehrenfels Castle. Thanks to a variety of regular concerts and events, you won’t be bored here.

Mannheim offers picturesque promenades along the river that invite you to relax and take a stroll. The squares and the unique grid-like street layout characterize the cityscape and are home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and cultural institutions. Mannheim is proud of its musical tradition and is known worldwide as the birthplace of the modern violin concerto and the first bicycle.

Itinerary

Day Place Arrival Departure
1 Duisburg - 17:00
Like Dortmund and Bochum, Duisburg became well known as a major location for the iron and steel industries. Nowadays, this city in the Ruhr region is a scientific hub and home to high-tech companies. Situated right on the Rhine, Duisburg is also one of the world’s most important inland ports.
2 Koblenz 12:00 16:00
Koblenz is where you’ll find Roman history, a high-tech research hub and a buzzing cultural scene all in one place. Don’t miss the delightful Kaiserin-Augusta-Anlagen, the southern part of the Rhine promenade. It was turned into a landscaped park with artistic historical monuments and sculptures between 1856 and 1861. If you fancy a treat, try Debbekooche. Originally eaten by those who couldn’t afford goose on Saint Martin’s Day, it is now considered a regional speciality and is traditionally served with apple sauce. Delicious!
2 Loreley Valley 18:00 -
The Ijsselmeer is an inland lake that was created by diking the Wadden Sea and the Zuiderzee bay. This is where you’ll find the lovely little town of Hoorn – make sure you explore it during your cruise along the northern Rhine.
3 Mannheim 08:00 23:00
As you sail along the southern Rhine during your river cruise, you will also learn about the many faces of Mannheim, the multicultural heart of the Rhine-Neckar metropolitan region. Welcome to the compact city. From the Neckar to the palace, the city centre is laid out in grid formation. The streets here have no official names, and the area is instead divided into squares.
4 Rüdesheim 05:00 -
In the Upper Middle Rhine Valley – a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the town of Rüdesheim marks the end of several old merchants’ routes. This strategically important point used to be protected by four castles. Picturesque Rüdesheim is known all around the world for its outstanding wines. Drosselgasse, an alleyway with half-timbered facades, is known as ‘The World’s Longest Wine Bar‘ and is reputed to be the most-visited tourist attraction in Germany after Cologne Cathedral. If you want to sample the local wines, head to the rustic wine taverns in the old town.

5 Bonn 16:00 -
Bonn, located at the heart of North Rhine-Westphalia, used to be the capital of the Federal Republic of Germany. As a seat of government, it is where many important policies were made. Make the most of the excursions on your Rhine cruise to experience the best of this 2,000-year-old city with a very eventful past. Highlights include the house where Beethoven was born and the magnificent buildings that date back to the prince-electors’ era.

6 Cologne 10:00 18:00
Welcome to Cologne! The typical friendliness that you find at every turn makes visitors feel at home right away. It’s not unusual to quickly get chatting to strangers and even go for a couple of glasses of Kölsch with them. The main landmark – Cologne Cathedral – watches over the whole city. It is the third-tallest church building in the world, at 157.38 metres. It might be a bit of a trek up to the top of the tower, but it’s worth it. You’ll be rewarded with an unforgettable view of the city and the Rhine spread out before you.
6 Düsseldorf 21:00 -
Whether you’re strolling along one of Germany’s leading luxury shopping streets, the ‘Kö’, enjoying an Altbier fresh from the tap in one of the old town’s more than 300 pubs or discovering one of the city’s many green spaces, Düsseldorf has almost everything you could wish for. Most of the city’s population seems to frequent the Uerige – the archetypical Düsseldorf brewery – even though the name of the establishment comes from a local word for ‘grumpy’. The Köbesse – as waiting staff are known here – are rather unfriendly, in keeping with tradition.
